Client: A Community College in Northern Virginia

Project Details: This year the college that I work for decided they wanted to come up with something unique and different for its catalog cover design. In the past the cover has usually been one, large eye catching photo taken at one of the campuses.

During a brainstorm meeting we decided that it would be great to showcase 20-25 different students from each of the three college locations. On the front we would feature a normal headshot of the student, while on the back cover we would show a photograph of the student taken from behind (giving the catalog a nice effect if you flip it over). To further help spotlight the college itself, the students were asked to finish the statement “LFCC is . . . ” with a short sentence which would accompany their back photo.

With the help of the Student Life Office, I traveled to each college location and met with each student to take their picture. Each student was very friendly and excited to be a part of the project…one of the main reasons this project was so fun! The final printed catalog arrived this week and students, employs and faculty are really excited about the cover.

Client: A Community College in Northern Virginia

Project Details: This piece is a brochure (with a business reply card) that I designed to help promote an educational center in Luray, Virginia. The brochure’s goal was to raise awareness of the educational center to those residing in the surrounding counties.

I designed the brochure as an eight-page booklet featuring full-color photographs of the center and its students. Strong callouts are prevalent throughout the brochure highlighting the experiences of several people that have benefited from attending the center. All photographs within the publication were taken by myself as part of a “mini-photo shoot” when visiting the center in Luray.

The brochure was mailed to thousands of business and resident addresses.

The final specifications of the publication follow:

Size: 6 x 9″ booklet, eight pages

Stock: 80# Endurance Velvet Cover (white)

Ink: 4/4 (cmyk / cmyk), with bleeds

L-shaped perforation for the business replay card on page 6/7

Collected Adobe InDesign CS4 files, fonts and images sent via FTP

Final PDF File: Educational Center Brochure (1.4MB)

Testimonial: “I have received many positive comments about this piece! I just wanted everyone to know that we have had multiple inquiries (both telephone and walk-ins) based on the brochure. This is great! Thanks again.” — Manager of the Educational Center (name withheld)

Final Thoughts: One thing I always worry about when designing a piece like this is if the design will help influence people to take action. It is all about return on investment (ROI). Therefore the testimonial given by the manager of the center made me very happy. I like knowing that my work is reaching thousands and inspiring them to pursue educational benefits.

Client: A Community College in Northern Virginia

Project Details: This is a four-panel, full color direct mail piece that I designed for my full-time employer (a community college in Northern Virginia). The mailer’s goal is to promote the College’s agreement with many four-year universities that allows students to easily transfer credits earned at the community college.

The mailer features four panels that “roll-fold” into a final size of 8.5″ wide by 6″ tall. Several photographs (a majority of which were taken by myself) are featured within the publication including testimonials of students from the college. The mailer also includes a perforated business reply card for potential students to mail back if they are interested in requesting additional information.

The publication was mailed to all households (in the college’s service area) that include occupants who are high school seniors.

The final specifications of the publication follow:

Size: 8.5″ x 23.63″, roll folds to 8.5 x 6″ (four panels)

Stock: 65# Productolith dull cover white

Ink: 4/4 (cmyk / cmyk), with bleeds

L-shaped perforation for the business replay card

Collected Adobe InDesign CS3 files, fonts and images sent via FTP

Final PDF File: Transfer Brochure (1.7MB)

Final Thoughts: I really enjoyed the final result of this piece. It is less text-heavy than most publications designed for the college, and features bold and bright colors. The large treatment I gave the headlines and sub-heads throughout the piece help it really “pop” out at the reader. The piece received many public accolades throughout the College as well.

Project Details: This is an 11×17″, full color direct mail piece that I designed for my full-time employer (a community college in Northern Virginia). The mailer was created to promote the College’s campus in Warrenton, Virginia and features various profiles of students that attended this particular campus.

I gave most of the photographs within the publication the “polariod” treatment to help make the piece more intimate with the reader. The mailer is unique in that there is no obvious strong call to action towards the reader. Its only goal was to create awareness of the College’s Warrenton, Virginia campus to long-time (and new) residents of the area.

The final specifications of the publication follow:

Quantity: 50,000 printed and mailed

Client: A Community College in Northern Virginia

Project Details: This is a four-color, two-sided postcard that I designed for my full-time employer (a community college in Virginia). The postcard’s objective was to promote an upcoming event targeting administrative professionals (mainly working mothers).

Electronic text was provided to me in Microsoft Word format and no other guidance was given to allow to use my creative freedom when creating the publication. I chose to use a strong magenta ink to make the publication noticeable when mixed in with the other mail it would be competing against. The magenta color scheme also helps show that the publication is geared towards a mainly female audience.

The final specifications of the publication follow:08-LFCC-194 Admin. Professionals Retreat Postcard

Printing Specs:

Size: 5 x 8″

Qty: 600 (281 to be mailed)

Ink: CMYK / CMYK (with bleeds)

Stock: 100# white glossy-coated cover

Assembly: Varnish if needed for addressing purposes (so addressing ink does not smear on the coated stock

File Specs:

Collected Adobe InDesign CS3 files, fonts and images sent via FTP or overnight disc.

Spring 2009 Administrative Professionals Retreat Postcard (1.3MB)

Final Thoughts: I think the color scheme of this logo is strong. I also am fond of the “juggling” treatment I created for the images on the front side.

Client: A Community College in Northern Virginia

Project Details: This is a forty-page class schedule that I designed for my full-time employer’s (a community college in Virginia) Office of Workforce Solutions and Continuing Education. The class schedule is developed twice a year and mailed to over 12,000 recipients. The class schedule contains photographs, promotional highlights and class listings for the Office of Workforce Solutions.

I took the cover photograph using an Olympus digital SRL camera at a construction site with one of the many businesses that utilize the classes and training provided by Workforce Solutions. Electronic text was provided to me in Microsoft Word format and no other guidance was given to allow to use my creative freedom when creating the publication.

The final specifications of the publication follow:

Quantity: 12,000 (with 7,300 to be mailed).

Cover:

Stock: 65# glossy coated cover white

Ink: 4/4 (cmyk / cmyk), with bleeds

Varnish: As needed for ink-jetting of mailing addresses to back cover

Inside Pages:

No. of pages: 36

Stock: 70# dull coated text white

Ink: 1/1 (black / black), no bleeds

Varnish: None

Binding:

Saddle-stitched

File Specs:

Collected Adobe InDesign CS3 files, fonts and images sent via FTP

Spring 2009 WSCE Class Schedule PDF File (4.5MB)

Final Thoughts: This publication was quite a task to layout (40 pages of promotional material AND class listings). However, the final product turned out great. The printer did a top-notch job as well.

Client: A Community College in Northern Virginia

Project Details: This is a twelve-page college viewbook I designed for my full-time employer. The purpose of the viewbook is to give potential students, parents or visitors a general overview of the College and what it has to offer. I took many of the photos featured within the publication using an Olympus digital SRL camera. Electronic text was provided to me in Microsoft Word format and no other guidance was given to allow to use my creative freedom when creating the publication. The final product was printed on 80lb white gloss cover with an added varnish.

Final Thoughts: This is one of my favorite publications that I have created for this partiuclar community college. It is short, provides plenty of colorful photos and uses a nice color scheme.

Client: Bike and the Like

Project Details: Suzie Knable, owner and avid cyclist behind Bike and the Like, requested that I design a four-color tri-fold brochure to promote her company’s bike tour offerings. Along with her husband Roger, Suzie’s company hosts bicycle tours all across the world. Suzie provided me with electronic text and photographs to be used in her brochure, along with her company’s previously designed logo.

The brochure was designed in four color and formatted so that Suzie could have it printed professionally at a local printing vendor or on her personal inkjet printer at home. Some color correction and adjustments were also performed to the photographs to enhance their appearance as well.

Testimonial: “I feel like I have a talented graphic artist at my fingertips! I always get a speedy reply, work delivered quickly and Aaron takes my ideas and makes them into a creative finished product.” — Suzie Knable , Bike and the Like

Final Thoughts: A colorful, satisfactory publication. I think one too many font types were used on the inside, so that would be an enhancement I would make if I was able to revise the brochure.
