Photo Session Date: February 6, 2010
Photo Session Location: Winchester, Virginia
Photo Session Details: Not even two months ago I sat here and posted photographs from a blizzard in which we received 20″ of snow. I thought at the time “wow…we won’t see snow like that again for quite awhile”. Well we did…during the same winter season! The blizzard of 2010 ended today with a snowfall total of 31.5″ at my house. We were very lucky not to lose power during the storm. The snow is so high it almost reaches my waist. After shoveling paths around the house all day long, I was about to turn in for the day when the sun came out just in time to set, so naturally I had to grab my camera. Numb fingers and all, I took some photographs hoping to capture the memories of the blizzard of 2010.

This series is part of an on-going 26-week project entitled the ABCs of Photography in which I take a few photographs each week centered on on specific letter of the alphabet.
J is for Joharv the Cat - I will start by saying up front that I am not a cat person. Joharv is my wife’s cat and he came along with her as part of getting married. However, if I was a cat person, Joharv would certainly be the type of cat I would have. He is a breed of bengal and is one of the absolute most friendliest cats you will ever meet. He even knows how to do a few tricks (sit, up and fetch). The interesting thing about these photographs to me is that they seem to exhibit his “bengal” side…almost tiger-like in a way. He is a beautiful breed of animal…cat fan or not.

Photo Session Date: January 20, 2010
Photo Session Location: Winchester, VA
Photo Session Details: Family portraits are on par with weddings as my favorite type of subject matter to photograph. Don’t get me wrong…I will photograph anything and everything and love doing it…but there is something special about being around a happy family and capturing their moments together. The Collegeman family was a great example of this. The husband and wife were naturals in front of the camera as I took their pictures and their adorable 4-month-old daughter seemed to enjoy it just as much. Maybe it was my funny looking camera equipment, but the baby gave me more than enough smiles for the pictures

Photo Session Date: January 15, 2010
Photo Session Location: Romney, WV
Photo Session Details: Ashby Embrey, owner and DJ for Part “Ay” Music, requested that I photograph a teenager’s birthday party they were providing DJ services for. The party was a blacklight party, and I knew right away this was going to be a challenge. Any hint of a flash or external lighting would kill the blacklight effect within the photograph, not to mention that there would be a great deal of dancing and motion within the photographs. As a photographer, light is your best friend and for this request I knew I would not have much of it to work with. The resulting photographs turned out fairly well in my opinion and I learned a great deal from this experience (ideas on how to get even better photographs the next time around). I hope to work with Ashby and his DJ services company again in the near future to photograph more of their events.

Photo Session Date: December 28, 2009
Photo Session Location: Capon Springs, WV
Photo Session Details: Ayron and Alana will be getting married this spring at Capon Springs, West Virginia. Residing in Massachusetts, Ayron and Alana picked this date to hold the engagement photography session as they were in the Virginia area visiting family and friends for the holidays. According to the Capon Springs Web site, “since the 1840s, guests have journeyed to Capon Springs seeking rest, relaxation and rejuvenation. Nature’s gifts of woodlands, water and food provide the perfect setting to experience the bounty of resources here.” This was my first-ever visit to Capon Springs and there was still some snow on the ground from the two feet’s worth the Virginia / West Virginia area received two weeks prior. Slushy snow and cold weather aside, a good time was had by the three of us getting to know each other…and Ayron and Alana are complete naturals when it comes to having their picture taken together!
